SEVEN YEARS ONLINE
A quick review of The Scythes of the Emperor Online Presence

Quite a time, seven years. From text based websites with minute and pixellated images to high-resolution layouts and HTML trickery. The Scythes website has change quite a bit.
With the latest incarnation of the website I thought some of my long time visitors and those new to the Scythes had a chance to see the Scythes from their very beginning till today.

This is what started it all. Images in the Advanced Space Crusade game by GW. This also started my dislike of Tyranids, naturally.

Simple as that really. Plenty of other pieces of art, ranging from Tyranids ripping apart old Space Fleet vessels. Then I came across this gem that I discovered one day in a card swapping store :

The artist is lost to me now, european of Spanish or Italian background judging by the name I am looking for. The words on the back of the card mentioned that the art was not accepted by GW for an upcoming Sci-Fi game set. (Obviously Advanced Space Crusade at the time)

Sealed on what I was wanting to do, I set out to paint up the Scythes and from there settle the score with these xeno scum - Tyranids. I hosted on Geo-Cities for about a year then my friends amongst The Taken (Of Apocrypha 40k fame - Christopher Allen, Christian Augst, Mike Major, Darryl Trainor, Nick Itsou, Erick Kilmer, Geoff Kemp, Mike Shwtizgebel, Jimmy Murphy too name a few) bought me www.thescythes.com as a birthday present. Not to let this sit, I burst onto the internet and shortly thereafter got list on GWs website as a website to visit.

The following is a montage of pictures, images and art from the last few years of the Scythes being online. I thank my friends and supporters for the time you have spent browsing my obssession.

The first SoTE logo for my website.

The second SoTE Banner for website V2

A collection of animated Gifs I used on the first and second websites back in the late 1990's
Early combat photos I used to setup or taken during games of Space Hulk. Anywhere from 1997-2000. You'll see the first of my Scythe Emblems on the terminator captain. Freehand work of which I was immensely proud.
Couple of fight scenes I touched up from games I played in the UK whilst I lived there. Most likely 2000.
Fairly recent battle scene, Brother Captain Xaver dueling with a Tyranid Warrior whilst Julius aerates the cranium of a nearby 'Gaunt. Probably 2000-1.

In the most recent scythes website this was the banner title. Alot of inspiration from the 3rd edition codex cover there.

My Warpgate members badge, one of the first sites listed by Games Workshops new web presence all those years ago. Still a cool thing to have gotten.
The third iteration of the Scythes website. This one disappeared due to my ISP at the time 'forgetting' to renew my domain. So I purchased www.the-scythes.com. The yellow bar menu used to sit on the top, then moved to the side then in what I call www.thescythes.com ver.3.2 it sat both on the top and the bottom much like this site today. The twin bar theme was the most commented on in ages.
The most recent scythes website, fourth variant. Nifty flash gimmicks, but to involved to update if I had been busy for awhile. I enjoyed this one and the holo-map is still used in this website today. Most considered the webpage had died, only to be delighted in finding www.the-scythes.com anew.

Around 2001-2002 I received an email from Games Workshop wishing to have me aboard as the one of the first twenty websites to be listed as a Warpgate member site. Pretty darned cool, my small Space Marine Chapter page was right up there with the best webzines and warhammer sites on the internet. The Scythes had certainly reached a long way.

Throughout all these various websites I continually and still do receive cool emails about what people thought of the website. Its been great and really kept me going for all these years. Another feature which is fully re-instated is the Cartoons I did. I have dragged from my archives some of the oldest pieces that got me noticed online all those years ago.

Thank you for reading the background to the Scythes websites, look around and enjoy the largest amount of articles I have ever shown on the website before.

kind regards,
Sebastian J Stuart
